CABLING INFRASTRUCTURE From the May 2006 issue of Communications News |
Plenum-rated fiber The 24-strand indoor/outdoor plenum-rated fiber-optic cable permits building owners to connect buildings with fiber-optic cables that can run directly between the telecommunication rooms of the buildings being linked. By eliminating the need to terminate the fiber-optic cables in the entrance facility of the buildings, as required with standard outside plant fiber-optic cable, there are reduced termination costs, decreased entrance facility space requirements, and termination points are kept in a protected environment by placing them in the telecommunication rooms. The cables can also be installed in plenum spaces without the use of plenum innerduct. The cables are tight buffered with a 900-micron buffer and can accept connectors without the breakout kit typically required for loose-tube style outdoor fiber-optic cables. 62.5 micron multimode fiber is currently available, with 50-micron multimode and 8.3 micron single-mode soon to be released. Six to 12 fiber counts are also available.

Highly bendable fiber AllWave FLEX ZWP single-mode fiber is a zero water peak G.652D fiber designed for applications where small bend diameters may be encountered. The fiber maintains low bending loss across the full usable spectrum of wavelengths, from 1,260 nm to 1,625 nm. It can be coiled into a 20-mm loop with < 0.5 dB incurred loss at 1,625 nm and < 0.2 dB incurred loss at 1,550 nm–five times better bending performance than conventional single-mode fibers. AllWave FLEX ZWP fiber also helps improve cable performance in demanding high-stress and low-temperature environments by providing double the microbending performance of conventional single-mode fibers. |

Rack cooling The CoolFrame solution integrates Liebert XD cooling technology with the Egenera BladeFrame EX system, enabling customers to deploy high-performance servers while adding virtually no heat to their facilities. Adding CoolFrame reduces the heat dissipation of the rack to the room from as much as 20,000 watts to a maximum of 1,500 watts, without impacting the performance of the 12 processor cores per square foot. The CoolFrame solution also reduces the energy costs for data center cooling of a BladeFrame EX environment by eliminating 1.5 kW of fan load per rack from the room cooling system. The Liebert XD is a waterless cooling solution that delivers focused cooling through an infrastructure that includes a pumping unit or chiller, and overhead piping system with quick-connect fixtures. Flexible piping connects Liebert XD cooling modules to the infrastructure, making the addition of modules or reconfiguring the system easier. Emerson Network Power |
